CrossFit is defined as “constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movement.” Functional movements are universal motor recruitment patterns. In other words, they are movements that we all do (or should be doing) in our day-to-day life. Squatting, lifting objects over your head, carrying heavy things, and moving your body across a long distance are all functional movements necessary to live an independent lifestyle for years to come. CrossFit workouts employ a wide range of different exercises to help athletes improve and sustain strength, mobility, and stamina. By performing these constantly varied workouts at a high intensity relative to the athlete’s ability, CrossFitters enjoy a well-rounded fitness program that will allow you to look your best, feel your best, and maintain a healthy functional lifestyle as you age.
Nope! Getting you into shape is what we’re here for! Every workout at CrossFit can be scaled up or down according to each athlete’s fitness level. In every class our coaches will help you find the scaling options that are right for you. Come to class consistently and you’ll probably be surprised at how much progress you make in your first couple months.
CrossFit class lasts one hour. Class begins with a coach-led group warm-up. After that your coach will review the workout of the day (WOD) and lead an instruction time where you'll be coached on the specific exercises in that day’s workout. Whether you’ve been doing CrossFit for years or it’s your very first class, all athletes benefit from this time spent reviewing proper form and technique. Next we will move on to the workout of the day. Your coach will make sure you have a plan for how to scale the WOD to your own level, and they will be actively engaged in coaching and encouraging you the whole time. Depending on the day, there may be a period of stretching or accessory exercise to end the hour.
Whatever you feel comfortable working out in! T-shirt or tank, shorts or leggings or joggers, and a good pair of athletic shoes. Once you catch the CrossFit bug, we can recommend some good CrossFit shoes for you. (NoBulls and Nike Metcons are our favorites, but they are not necessary when you’re first starting out!)
Just bring a water bottle and yourself! As time goes on, some of our members eventually choose to invest in their own gear (jump ropes, hand grips, lifting shoes, etc) but CFT will always provide everything you need for any given workout.
You bet! All members have access to Open Gym anytime CFT is open. If you want to get in some extra training time, or you have a day when you can’t make it to class but want to do the WOD on your own, the gym is yours to use as you wish. We simply ask that if you come in for Open Gym during a class time, you give priority of space and equipment to the class in session.
Yes. As soon as you purchase a CFT membership, you’ll be emailed a link to create an account on a platform called Wodify. You’ll download the Wodify app to your phone, and from there you’ll be able to preview all the workouts for the upcoming week and sign in for the classes you plan to attend.
